Dan Fessler’s HD Index Painting Technique let’s you paint pixel art in Photoshop in a non-destructive manner, and lets you use pretty much every tool in a perfectly pixel-gradient fashion!

The article gives you everything you need to try it out for yourself. It’s easy to set up and use, and the results are so fucking cool.

If you are 35 or younger - and quite often, older - the advice of the old economy does not apply to you. You live in the post-employment economy, where corporations have decided not to pay people. Profits are still high. The money is still there. But not for you. You will work without a raise, benefits, or job security. Survival is now a laudable aspiration.

Quoted from Sarah Kendzior’s “Surviving the Post-Employment Economy

“In the United States, nine percent of computer science majors are unemployed, and 14.7 percent of those who hold degrees in information systems have no job. Graduates with degrees in STEM - science, technology, engineering and medicine - are facing record joblessness, with unemployment at more than twice pre-recession levels. The job market for law degree holders continues to erode, with only 55 percent of 2011 law graduates in full-time jobs. Even in the military, that behemoth of the national budget, positions are being eliminated or becoming contingent due to the sequester.

It is not skills or majors that are being devalued. It is people.”

Her work is frank, speaking of a reality I hope that will never be mine. At the same time, it gives me a strange comfort to know that I am not alone.

I will always reblog this quote.  Hits way too close to home for me.

The most salient part of this, to me, is the underscoring of the fact that there is no “right” college major where you’re guaranteed a job forever. Conservatives love to pretend college graduates working minimum-wage or freelance jobs just didn’t “pick the right major” - those foolish fools studied the arts or literature or something else frivolous, so they deserve crushing debt and no job security! No. There is no magical college major that will let you sidestep the jobless recovery.

Potree

Code developed to display pointclouds of 3D scans in your browser, rendered with WebGL:

Potree is a WebGL based point cloud viewer for very large datasets, based on Scanopy.

This might look like technical stuff to you, but check the demos below - this software could be used to render the photos you take on future smartphones equiped with depth sensors.

Above you can see examples rendered with the software (which you can view yourself): here is a link to ‘Pompei' and here is one of a 'skatepark’.

The Potree website can be found here, it’s code at Github here (as well as code to convert 3D scan data here)

Mary Bowser, former slave of the Van Lew family, infiltrated the Confederacy by working as a servant in the household of Jefferson Davis. Bowser was assumed to be illiterate, and as a black woman was below suspicion. Practically invisible, she was able to listen to conversations between Confederate officials and read sensitive documents, gathering information that she handed over to the Union.

This needs to be a movie. Like, now.

I’d watch this movie.

How is this not a movie?

You know how.

FAKE GEEK GUYS: A MESSAGE TO MEN ABOUT SEXUAL HARASSMENT
By Andy Khouri
“I think this woman is wrong about something on the Internet. Clearly my best course of action is to threaten her with rape.”
That’s crazy talk, right? So why does it happen all the time?
Honest question, dudes.
That women are harassed online is not news. That women in comics and the broader fandom cultures are harassed online is not news. That these women are routinely transmitted anonymous messages describing graphic sexual violence perpetrated upon them for transgressions as grave as not liking a thing… that is actually news to me, and it’s probably news to a lot of you guys reading this.
So what do we do about it?
This.

This is important.

I’ve been reading about / researching / keeping tabs on articles of sexism and harassment in geekery and fandom for a few years now. I was naive when I started really tracking the articles roughly around 2010. I thought these kinda of online blow-ups were somehow new*. Now I have long since realised that they’re not. So long as women even dare to voice an opinion about anything, there will be men there to shout them down and tell them to shut up simply because they are women.
(And while I realise that sexism itself is nothing new, what I specifically refer to is the rape-threats and Anita Sarkeesian style comment harassment campaigns / doxxing, etc) It’s a digital hate mob for a new age)

There are no Jack Kerouacs or Holden Caulfields for girls. Literary girls don’t take road-trips to find themselves; they take trips to find men.

"Great" books, as defined by the Western canon, didn’t contain female protagonists I could admire. In fact, they barely contained female protagonists at all.
